Summary

What’s working in inclusive trustee recruitment, and how to support trustees once they’re in post.

Detailed description

Recent NCVO research found that 79% of charities have a least one vacant board position and that 60% of charities say board vacancies are preventing them from developing as an organisation.

Meanwhile, recent research from the Charity Commission for England and Wales and Pro Bono Economics found that, with the exception of gender, trustee diversity hasn’t improved since 2017, and has actually worsened for racial diversity.

Is there really a shortage of people who want to serve as a trustee? Or are we going about it the wrong way?

And how can we better support the trustees we’ve worked hard to recruit?

You’ll hear from recruitment experts and charities who have been successful in their trustee recruitment.

Expect insight, practical tips and a boost of optimism about inclusive trustee recruitment.

This session is particularly aimed at trustees and charity staff who are planning to recruit trustees

About Eastside People

Eastside People is the new home for the Festival of Trusteeship and the revived event will form a central part of this year’s Trustees’ Week (from 3rd to 7th November 2025).

The Festival of Trusteeship is a week-long online series of events, full of exciting options for anyone who wants to become a trustee, for committed trustees who want to keep learning and developing, and for charity leaders who want to understand best practice in trustee recruitment and inclusive governance.

The festival will deliver a mix of informative and practical webinars and workshops, and lively panel discussions relating to good charity board governance with a focus on diversity and inclusion. All sessions for aspiring trustees are free.

We’re delighted to announce that the Institute of Leadership is sponsoring this year’s event. A professional membership body representing a global community of managers, leaders, and organisations continued learning is a key part of how they shape the future of leadership. We’re also very grateful to Ecclesiastical Insurance, the sponsors of the planned 2024 event. Additionally, we’re also extremely pleased to have the support of Stone King, a purpose-led law firm.

We are incredibly grateful to our headline sponsor Institute of Leadership, for all their support.
